Abstract

Abstract

The urgency for policies to plan and manage the European Mediterranean coastal landscape is now evident: along the Latin Arch exceptional landscape values are accompanied by a growing anthropic pressure that is speeding up its transformations, creating significant problems; it is here, more than in other places, that the challenge posed by the preservation-development pair emerges. This study looks at the strategies developed within three protected coastal landscapes that have taken up the challenge. Interpreted as test laboratories for landscape policies, they give precious cues for the planning and management of the ordinary coastal landscape.

Abstract

This text collects the revisions of some of the most significant degree theses written from 2011 to 2015 in the bachelor degree in City, territory and landscape planning and in the Master's degree in City and territory planning and design of University of Florence, Empoli campus. The theses cover the current diversified scenery of problems within the urban planning discipline, using very different methodologies, interpretations and perspectives of analysis. The territory emerging as the protagonist of the young authors' narratives is a complex and multi-layered object; it is constituted by things and relationships, set on the long times of history, aimed towards the present and projected into the future, and it continues to raise their questions, doubts, curiosities and also some fruitful answers. In summary, rather than chances for discussion on a disposable form of knowledge, this works offer chances for reflection and experimentation, and opportunities for the incremental construction of creative solutions by its authors.

Abstract

Abstract

The landscape originally responds to the awakening of our senses. Before we can even study a site, before we can project our experience, our memories or historical references, we are present with our whole body. The places we travel through invade us; their music overwhelms us. The landscape comes to us at the same time that we lose ourselves in it. We welcome it as it offers itself. Aesthetic moment, in the first sense, that of receptivity. This sensitive meeting is the source of multiple subsequent readings (environmental, patrimonial, economic, sociological, functional...). Its language is that of the landscape itself, inescapable for those who will make it their vocation. However, we often ignore this first discovery; we lack the words to express it. This book intends to let the strings of the landscape vibrate within us, to let its openings, its rhythms, its grain and its lights emerge to all our senses. Our mute experience of places seeks the word.

Abstract

This book brings together the materials of a study carried out by the Florence Faculty of Architecture in liaison with the Tuscan scientific community (five universities, research institutes and technicians from the Regional Authority) to define the methods and approaches of the new Landscape Plan. The aim was to exploit the opportunities offered by recent legislation, such as the European Landscape Convention and the Cultural Heritage and Landscape Code, in order to formulate public policies and projects designed to enhance the quality of life throughout the entire territory, both valuable and degraded. Different skills, aptitudes and passions have come together in the hope that the recent phase of planning can trigger mechanisms that stimulate the inhabitants of Tuscany to continue to produce the collective work of art that is their landscape, in the exquisitely normal manner and form that left scholars such Desplanques pleasantly perplexed when he wrote: «These people have constructed their rural landscapes as if they had no concern other than beauty.

Abstract

City and territory are currently experiencing a phase of development, or crisis, depending on whether they manage to form the know-how to respond to the current exponential evolution. Know-how that has to make a critical assessment of the fabric of structures, cultures and inherited layouts. Between continuity and innovation, contemporary town planning culture creates the basis for a more flexible model that can seek out new continuities by interpreting the present discontinuity, dissent, difference, decentralization and dispersion. This implies a processual space and new aesthetics of sense and therefore presupposes new themes able to redefine the physical-relational relationships by combining cultural roots, functional requirements and spatial layouts.

Abstract

Landscape architecture involves designing, planning, and managing natural and built environments. Its goal is to balance natural spaces with the human element. As such, new methods and analysis techniques are necessary for creating healthy and user-friendly spaces in both urban developments and natural environments. This book discusses these approaches to planning and designing natural spaces with a focus on sustainability.

Abstract

In September 2004, the first class of the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture of the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, a 5-year university course in 5 years, co-organized by three institutions of the French of the French Community of Belgium, the University Faculty of the University Faculty of Agronomic Sciences of Gembloux, the Haute École Charlemagne (I.S.I. Gembloux and Huy) and the ʼInstitut Supérieur d ʼArchitecture La Cambre Brussels. Lʼenseignement de l ʼarchitecture du paysage en French-speaking Belgium is however not new, it has a long tradition. even already has a long tradition. And the ancient training of the Gembloux graduate school is recognized, mainly l ʼétranger mais reste insuf fisamment connue en Belgium. It is in this context that a one-day seminar was organized on October 13, 2004. 2004, a study day entitled "Conversations Conversations on Landscape 2004", the first biennial meeting of the landscape. This dialogue, a meeting between the disciplines and professions of the landscape has a double objective. On the one hand, it intends to make known the work and the of landscape architecture in French-speaking Belgium, as well as the genesis and as well as the genesis and the institutions of lʼenseignement en cette matière. This is the subject of the premier part of the study day. On the other hand, according to the European Landscape Convention of Florence 2000 to which the Walloon Region has adhered since the Walloon Region joined in December 2001, landscape management of landscapes requires us to move beyond the scale of parks and parks and gardens to consider the whole range of objectives of the of the Convention, namely, to manage, protect and develop landscapes. ger landscapes. It is therefore now necessary for the landscape disciplines to converse, to know each other and to recognize each other. In this perspective, the second and the second and major part of the interventions opens the debate between the disciplines and professions of landscape, with presentation of exemplary cases stimulating the common reflection. This issue of the "Colloquia" series publishes the papers presented at the 2004 Landscape Conversations day.
